01. STARTUP EDITOR. There's a useful - and free - tool at
http://www.ibservice.com/startedit.htm . The IBS Startup
Editor lets you improve on the Msconfig option (accessed at
Start, Run, and the Startup tab). This handy application lets
you easily shut down all programs (except Explorer and Systray),
a good preliminary step in defragmenting the hard drive.

02. JUMPING OFF PLACE FOR SEARCHES. If you're looking for
something in particular, there are veritable hundreds (maybe
thousands?) of search engines on the Net. We could also
suggest a quick visit to
http://library.albany.edu/internet/choose.html
where the topics are neatly organized with the more appropriate
search engines for those subjects. If you're looking for
images there are two dozen search engines recommended. For
audio and music files there are nearly that many. Search sites
are even organized by topics, options, results, and database
quality, size, and style. See for yourself.

03. QUICK BACKUP. In Windows Explorer highlight a file and
press Ctrl + C, followed with Ctrl +V. This makes a backup of
the file, as a "Copy of" in the same folder.

04. OWNERSITE at http://www.ownersite.com/Expenses.cfm will
track just about everything you need to know about your
vehicles. Free for up to 2 vehicles, this "Vehicle Maintenance
Reminder and Expense Tracking System" lets you log your fuel
usage, oil changes, tire purchases, routine maintenance,
payments, and parts purchases. It generates cost reports and
analyzes fuel consumption. Now if it would only make gas a
little cheaper at the pumps!

05. HUMANCLOCK. Some enterprising type has attempted to
assign a Web site photo representing each minute of the day.
You are invited to submit a photo for your very own minute and
you can be as original as you wish, as long as the time is
shown for that minute. If you want your minute of fame, details
are at http://www.humanclock.com .

06. NETSCAPE NAVIGATIONAL AID. Of course you know that
clicking on the Back and Forward buttons in Netscape
Communicator takes you to another site you have recently
visited. Did you know that holding down the mouse button at
the same time opens a list of visited pages?

07. VOLUNTEER. If you're eager to do something good for your
community, enter your ZIP code at http://www.volunteermatch.org .
Or, if you have the need for volunteers in your community
activity, you can post the opportunity.

08. PARTIAL PRINT. If you're surfing with Microsoft Internet
Explorer and want just a part of a web page, usually you can
get it without printing the whole works. Just highlight the
part you want by holding your mouse key and moving the cursor
from the top to the bottom of the desired text. Click on the
printer icon and Selection under the print range, then click OK.

09. NETSCAPE COMMUNICATOR QUICK REFERENCE CARD. If your
browser of choice is Netscape Communicator, you'll find a
useful reference tool at http://help.netscape.com/products/
client/communicator/qrc/qrcfrnt.htm . The site provides a short
tutorial and shortcuts for Navigator, mailbox, newsgroups,
Composer, and calendar. You may want to print it.

10. DISABLING FRIENDLY HTTP ERROR MESSAGES. Instead of
displaying an error message such as "Error 404 Page not found,"
Internet Explorer treats you to its own "friendly" error page.
If you'd rather see the true error, go to
Tools|Internet Options|Advanced tab and deselect
"show friendly HTTP errors."

11. DELETING SINGLE HISTORY ITEMS. You probably know that
Microsoft Word 97/2000 maintains a history file of recent
documents, and you can access that from the File menu. If you
want to delete a single document from prying eyes, hold
Ctrl + Alt and press the hyphen key (don't confuse this with
the minus key to the right of the number pad). The mouse
pointer will change to a minus sign, then use the File menu to
display the history list and click on the single file
you want deleted.

12. FAST PRINT. Don't bother to open a file to print it.
Right click on it in the Windows Explorer screen, and select
Print from the context menu.

13. COMPAQ RECALL. Due to reported cases of fire, Compaq is
recalling AC adaptors and power cords used on their computers
sold from September 1998 through July 2001. Visit the Web site
at http://www.compaq.com or
http://www.cpsc.gov/cpscpub/prerel/prhtml02/02002.html
for more info.
